Fabio Capello has stood by his decision to play Wayne Rooney against Montenegro last night despite the Manchester United man being sent-off during the second-half.
Rooney’s father was arrested on the day prior to England’s crucial Euro 2012 qualification match and many questioned whether the forward was in the right frame of mind to play.
However, Capello stuck with him throughout and doesn’t believe he made a mistake in doing so, even though Rooney was dismissed for a moment of madness during the 2-2 draw that saw England qualify for Euro 2012.
The England boss said: “It was no mistake to pick him. He made a silly mistake in kicking the opponent and I think he will not play in the first game of Euro 2012 now because he will be suspended.”
“I spoke with him before the game and he was relaxed and calm, then went out on the pitch and made this silly mistake.”
“Wayne was not happy because he missed controlling the ball and some passes and for this reason I think the reaction was to kick the opponent.”
“I’m not happy and I spoke with him. He made a silly mistake and said he was sorry.”
As for the game itself, England went into a 2-0 lead during the first half with goals from Ashley Young and Darren Bent.
However, Montenegro came back after the break and after Rooney was sent-off, Capello’s men were holding on for the point they needed to qualify.
Considering England didn’t qualify for Euro 2008, they will be happy to progress even if it wasn’t as straight forward as they would have liked.
As for Rooney, he will now miss at least the first game of Euro 2012 after seeing red. He is also set to receive a wave of criticism from the England press for his needless actions in such an important game.

Can England do without Rooney at Euro2012 next year?
Surely there is no way Capello can leave him out, he’s England;s biggest threat and probably their best player.
